Lucknow, February 20: The Yogi government has reinforced its commitment to environmental conservation and afforestation with a robust budget for the Forest and Environment Department. While presenting the budget in the assembly, Finance Minister Suresh Khanna highlighted the unprecedented achievements in the sector.
One of the key announcements was the government’s plan to plant over 35 crore saplings once again in 2025.
Key points of the Finance Minister in the House:
* At present, the tree cover in Uttar Pradesh has increased to 9.96% of the state's total geographical area.
* UP ranks second in the country for the highest increase in forest and tree cover
* From 2021 to 2025, a total of 138.98 crore saplings have been planted across the state.
* A target of 35 saplings has been proposed for the 2025 monsoon season
* The tiger population in Uttar Pradesh has risen from 173 in 2018 to 205 in 2022.
* The Pilibhit Tiger Reserve has been honoured with the prestigious TX2 Award for successfully doubling its tiger population.
* India’s first vulture breeding centre, the "Red-Headed Vulture Conservation and Breeding Center," has been established in the Campier Range of Gorakhpur district.
* A new scheme has been proposed to establish the Uttar Pradesh Forestry and Horticulture University in Gorakhpur, with an initial budget allocation of Rs 50 crore.
