New Delhi (Desk) : In the past, Indian food lovers were satisfied with favorites like butter chicken, biryani, and dosa. But in recent years, a quiet food revolution has taken place across India, led by Korean cuisine. From fiery red packets of instant ramen to kimchi-stuffed rolls and rice cakes in spicy sauce, Korean food is now finding a special place in Indian hearts (and stomachs). But what sparked this love affair? Here are five reasons behind the rising popularity of Korean food in India.

1. The K-Wave: Food Through Pop Culture
Korean food’s popularity in India began with the global rise of Korean dramas (K-dramas) and K-pop music. Shows like Crash Landing on You and Squid Game gave Indian viewers a close-up look at everyday Korean meals like bubbling stews, sizzling meats, and spicy noodles.

As fans watched their favorite characters enjoying comforting bowls of ramen or cooking together as a family, they became curious to try those dishes themselves. What started as interest soon turned into obsession and restaurants and supermarkets were quick to meet the demand.

2. A Shared Love for Spice and Fermented Flavors
Indian cuisine is known for its bold, complex flavors. Korean food shares that love of spice, tanginess, and fermentation. Dishes like tteokbokki (rice cakes in spicy sauce), kimchi (fermented cabbage), and gochujang (spicy red chili paste) have flavors that feel familiar to Indian taste buds.

Even the idea of banchan, small side dishes served with every Korean meal is similar to the Indian concept of thalis with sabzi, chutney, and pickles. Both cultures enjoy variety in meals and believe food is best shared.

3. The Rise of Korean Cooking at Home
The pandemic changed how Indians cooked and ate. Stuck at home, many young Indians turned to YouTube and Instagram for cooking inspiration and found Korean recipes to be fun and flavorful.

Soon, Indian supermarkets were stocking gochujang, Korean noodles, seaweed, and even frozen Korean dumplings. Korean food kits became popular, and cooking these meals at home became an exciting weekend activity.

4. Korean Restaurants and Cloud Kitchens Boom in Cities
In cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, Korean restaurants and cloud kitchens are popping up everywhere. From street-style Korean fried chicken to kimchi-loaded pizzas, there’s a mix of traditional dishes and fusion creations.

Many of these restaurants offer stylish interiors, friendly service, and Instagram-worthy dishes, perfect for the social media generation that eats first with their eyes.

5. Korean Food Feels Healthy
Today’s Indian consumers are more health-conscious. They want meals that are tasty but also light, fresh, and good for the gut. Korean food often includes a lot of vegetables, fermented ingredients, and less oil. Dishes like kimchi, doenjang (soybean paste), and seaweed are rich in natural probiotics.

That “health halo” has made Korean cuisine a smart and guilt-free choice for many Indians looking to eat clean without giving up flavor.

From K-pop to kimchi, Indian consumers are embracing Korean culture one bite at a time. As global tastes blend with local love for spice and flavor, Korean food is becoming more than a trend, it’s turning into a staple in the Indian food scene.
