Jhansi, July 7 : In an inspiring act of bravery and service beyond duty, Major Rohit Bachwala of the Indian Army performed an emergency delivery at Jhansi Railway Station on July 5, saving both a mother and her newborn in a high-risk situation. The story has since gained nationwide praise, with the Chief of the Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, personally commending Major Rohit for his remarkable actions.
The incident took place when Major Rohit was traveling from Military Hospital Jhansi to his hometown Hyderabad. While waiting at the railway station, he noticed a woman in visible distress near the lift area. She had fallen from a wheelchair and was in advanced labour, with no medical help nearby.
Realizing the urgency of the situation, Major Rohit acted immediately. Without any hospital tools and only a few basic items - a towel, a knife, and hair clips, he carried out the emergency delivery right there on the platform.
The newborn was not breathing at birth, but Major Rohit managed to resuscitate the baby, using emergency medical techniques. He then attended to the mother, who was experiencing complications related to the placenta. Despite being in a non-clinical setting, he stabilized her condition using his training and the limited resources at hand.
Both mother and child were later moved to a government medical facility, where they are reported to be safe and recovering well.
General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of the Army Staff, recognized Major Rohit’s outstanding courage and professionalism, praising his calmness under pressure and his commitment to saving lives. His swift, life-saving actions reflect the values of the Indian Armed Forces duty, selflessness, and excellence, even when off duty.
Eyewitnesses at the railway station were deeply moved by the sight. “He did not think twice. He saw a life in danger and acted without hesitation. That’s true heroism,” said one passenger who witnessed the event.
This incident reminds the nation that military service extends far beyond the battlefield. Major Rohit’s quick thinking and dedication show that the spirit of service is alive even in the most unexpected places.
