Edgbaston, Birmingham | July 5, 2025 :
India dominated Day 4 of the second Test at Edgbaston, declaring their second innings at 422 for 6 and setting England a massive target of 608 runs, one of the highest ever in Test cricket. The visitors are now firmly in control heading into the final day.
Captain Shubman Gill was once again the star of the show. After his brilliant 269 in the first innings, he followed it up with a classy 161 in the second, taking his total to 430 runs in the match. It was a historic performance that placed him among cricket’s elite, showcasing patience, timing, and leadership under pressure.
He was well supported by Rishabh Pant, who added a quick 65 with his trademark attacking shots, and Ravindra Jadeja, who built a solid partnership with the skipper. Towards the end of the innings, Washington Sundar hit a big six, helping India cross the 600-lead mark.
Despite wickets from Brydon Carse, Shoaib Bashir, and Josh Tongue, England’s bowlers struggled to keep India in check. India’s decision to bat deep into Day 4 instead of declaring early was strategic, they drained England physically and mentally, ensuring the hosts have little chance of chasing or even surviving on Day 5.
With a deteriorating pitch and a world-class Indian bowling attack ready to strike, England face an uphill battle. Their only realistic option may be to bat out the day and hope for a draw. But with such a massive target and fading confidence, even that looks unlikely.
India has not only taken control of the match but has also made a strong statement in the series with this performance. All eyes will now be on how Day 5 unfolds.
