Coney Island, Brooklyn, July 4, 2025 : Joey “Jaws” Chestnut made a triumphant return to the stage at the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on Thursday, devouring 71 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes to reclaim his crown after missing last year’s event due to a sponsorship dispute. The iconic eating competition, held every Independence Day at Coney Island, drew a massive crowd of spectators and a nationwide television audience eager to see if Chestnut could regain his dominance.

The 41-year-old competitive eating legend lived up to expectations, outpacing his rivals with mechanical precision and sheer appetite. With the crowd roaring and ESPN cameras rolling, Chestnut delivered another masterclass in the world of speed eating, securing his 17th Mustard Belt title in 18 years. His victory solidified his status as the undisputed king of competitive eating.

Chestnut had been absent from the 2024 contest after a fallout with event organizers over a brand conflict, during which Patrick Bertoletti clinched the title. This year, however, Chestnut and Nathan’s Famous reached an agreement, paving the way for his much-anticipated comeback. Bertoletti put up a strong fight but managed only 52 hot dogs, finishing second.

On the women’s side, Miki Sudo claimed her 11th title with 32 hot dogs and buns, reinforcing her dominance in the sport. Sudo, who holds the women’s world record of 51 dogs, remained calm and composed as she breezed past her competitors. Her continued reign adds another chapter to her storied career, one that mirrors Chestnut’s in consistency and competitive fire.

The Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest has become a quirky yet beloved staple of America’s Fourth of July celebrations. What began as a promotional stunt decades ago has grown into a fiercely competitive and televised spectacle, complete with live commentary, official judges, and a fanbase that treats the eaters like rock stars. This year’s contest featured a prize pool of $10,000 for the winner, with cash awards going to runners-up as well.

For Chestnut, this year’s victory was more than just another belt. It was a statement. "This contest is part of who I am. I missed it last year, but I came back hungrier than ever," he said after the win. Fans chanted his name, waving flags and foam hot dogs as confetti rained down around the iconic Nathan’s Famous stage.

Despite his advancing age, Chestnut shows no sign of slowing down. With 71 hot dogs under his belt this year and a record 76 in 2021, he remains the face of the sport and its most feared competitor.

As the sun set on Coney Island, one thing was clear: Joey Chestnut had returned, and in spectacular fashion. The Mustard Belt is back where it belongs strapped around the waist of the greatest competitive eater the world has ever seen.
