Uttarakhand, often referred to as “Devbhoomi” (Land of the Gods), has once again proven its commitment to religious tourism with a landmark initiative – the darshan of Mount Kailash from Indian soil. The recent inauguration of this route not only fulfills the long-standing desires of Shiva devotees but also marks a historic moment in the region’s tourism development.

For centuries, the sacred Mount Kailash, situated in Tibet, has been a spiritual goal for millions of devotees, symbolizing the abode of Lord Shiva. However, since the suspension of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in 2020, devotees have eagerly awaited an alternative. With the collective efforts of the Government of Uttarakhand, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), this dream has been realized. The recent successful pilgrimage to the Old Lipulekh Peak, offering a view of Mount Kailash, signifies more than just a new route—it signals a boost to the state’s religious tourism and economic development in border areas.

The first batch of pilgrims, from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Punjab, commenced their journey on 2nd October, Gandhi Jayanti, and experienced the divine sight of Mount Kailash the next day. This endeavor is not limited to Mount Kailash alone; the tour package also includes the darshan of Adi Kailash and Om Parvat, adding to the spiritual richness of the experience. The use of helicopter services from Pithoragarh to Gunji ensures the journey remains comfortable, even for senior pilgrims, and showcases the meticulous planning by Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN).

At a time when international travel restrictions have impacted pilgrimage tourism, this initiative offers devotees the solace of fulfilling their religious aspirations from within India. The added benefit of witnessing the sacred peaks from Indian soil will undoubtedly draw thousands of pilgrims and further promote the state’s lesser-explored regions.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s appreciation for the involved departments reflects the government’s focus on religious and cultural tourism, which has always been a strong component of Uttarakhand’s identity. Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj’s acknowledgment of the discovery as a “historic event” cements the significance of this project for future pilgrims.

Priced at Rs. 80,000, the 4 nights/5 days package offers a well-rounded spiritual journey, catering to both domestic and international devotees. With accommodations provided by KMVN and homestays, tourists can also experience the local culture and hospitality, ensuring a truly immersive experience. This move not only strengthens the religious tourism sector but also holds potential for significant socio-economic benefits for the bordering regions of Uttarakhand.

The opening of the Mount Kailash darshan route is a testament to Uttarakhand’s resolve to serve its devotees and promote religious tourism. It’s a bold step towards making Devbhoomi accessible to all and an achievement that will resonate with pilgrims for years to come. The sacred mountains are calling, and Uttarakhand is ready to offer a divine experience like never before.
