Jodhpur, August 26, 2025:

A tragic incident in Jodhpur has left the community shaken after a 32-year-old government school teacher and her three-year-old daughter died following a suspected act of self-immolation. According to police, the woman allegedly set herself and her daughter on fire on August 22 at her residence in Sarnada Ki Dhani, leaving behind a note that accused her husband and in-laws of continuous harassment related to dowry.

The young girl succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while her mother was admitted to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital with severe burn injuries and passed away the following day. Police officials said a suspected can of petrol was recovered from the scene, and the house was reportedly locked from the inside, with no signs of struggle.

The deceased’s father filed a complaint stating that the woman had been married to the accused 12 years ago, during which the family provided a car and other valuables as dowry. Despite these gifts, she allegedly faced persistent harassment, which reportedly intensified after the birth of her daughter. In the note recovered during the police investigation, the woman described the alleged torture and harassment by her husband and in-laws as the reason for her taking her own life and that of her child.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Nagendra Kumar confirmed the discovery of the note and said the investigation is ongoing. The police have booked the woman’s husband along with three other family members in connection with the case. The deceased’s mobile phone has been seized and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for further examination.

The incident has highlighted the persistent issues of dowry-related harassment and domestic abuse in India, raising questions about the protection and rights of women in vulnerable domestic situations. Experts note that such extreme acts are often preceded by long periods of emotional, financial, or physical abuse, underscoring the importance of intervention and awareness.

Authorities and mental health professionals emphasize the need for immediate support for individuals facing domestic harassment or mental distress.
