New Delhi | Aug 09, 2025 : Raksha Bandhan 2025: Festive markets are buzzing with colours, sweets, and excitement

As India celebrates Raksha Bandhan today, August 9, 2025, markets across the country are witnessing a festive boom with record footfall and soaring sales of rakhis, sweets, and gift items. The festival, which honours the cherished bond between brothers and sisters, has brought vibrant energy to both urban shopping hubs and small-town bazaars.

This year, shopkeepers report a surge in demand for designer rakhis, eco-friendly rakhis, and personalised gift hampers. From gold-plated rakhis to biodegradable seed rakhis that can be planted after use, customers are spoilt for choice. Many stores are also offering special discounts and “Rakhi combo” deals, including sweets, chocolates, and gift vouchers.

Post-Pandemic Spending Back in Full Swing
Traders say 2025 has been one of the strongest years for Raksha Bandhan sales in over a decade. “Last year was good, but this year people are shopping without hesitation. On average, customers are spending 25–30% more,” said Ramesh Agarwal, president of the Delhi Traders’ Association.

Major e-commerce platforms have also recorded a sharp rise in orders for same-day deliveries of rakhis and gifts, especially for siblings living in different cities or abroad. According to industry estimates, the online Raksha Bandhan market alone is expected to cross ₹1,500 crore in sales this year.

Sweet Shops and Florists See High Demand
Sweet shops are working round the clock to meet orders for traditional favourites like kaju katli, motichoor laddoo, and rasgulla. In Jaipur’s famous Johri Bazaar, some popular stores reported selling over 500 kg of sweets in just two days.

Florists too are witnessing brisk business, with many siblings choosing to send fresh flower arrangements along with rakhis. Seasonal flowers like roses, orchids, and lilies are among the top sellers.

Eco-Friendly Trends Take Centre Stage
Another noticeable trend this year is the shift towards sustainable gifting. Many sisters are opting for eco-friendly rakhis made from natural fibres, recycled materials, or embedded with seeds. “These rakhis bloom into plants, making the bond truly evergreen,” said Shruti Sharma, a designer who sells handmade rakhis in Bengaluru.

Reusable packaging, jute gift bags, and organic sweets are also gaining traction as environmentally conscious consumers make sustainable choices for the festival.

Travel Surge as Families Reunite
Indian Railways and domestic airlines have reported a spike in bookings in the week leading up to Raksha Bandhan. Several trains to popular hometown destinations are running at full capacity, with additional coaches added to meet demand. Bus operators too are reporting full occupancy on intercity routes.

“After a long time, the festival falls on a weekend without any inauspicious timing issues. Families are making the most of it to travel and celebrate together,” said a senior official from the Railways.

Security Tightened in Public Spaces
With heavy crowds in marketplaces and public transport hubs, state police forces have stepped up security measures. Additional personnel have been deployed in busy shopping districts, and CCTV monitoring has been intensified.

Authorities have also urged citizens to be cautious about pickpocketing and to shop from trusted vendors to avoid counterfeit products.

A Celebration of Bonds and Togetherness
While the shopping frenzy is evident, for many families the day remains rooted in emotions and tradition. Sisters lovingly prepare thalis with rakhis, rice, and sweets, while brothers pledge lifelong protection and often surprise their sisters with heartfelt gifts.

In several housing societies and community centres, collective Rakhi celebrations are being organised, bringing together neighbours and friends to tie rakhis, share sweets, and enjoy cultural performances.

As the sun sets today, millions of homes across India will be lit up with laughter, blessings, and the unbreakable bond of love between siblings — a reminder that Raksha Bandhan is more than just a festival; it’s an enduring celebration of trust, care, and togetherness.
