Srinagar | August 3, 2025 : A serious altercation at Srinagar airport has resulted in a police case against an Indian Army officer, Ritesh Kumar Singh, and a SpiceJet staffer following a violent dispute over excess cabin luggage. The incident took place on July 26 during the boarding of SpiceJet flight SG-386 bound for Delhi.
According to SpiceJet’s statement, the trouble began when the officer tried to board with two cabin bags weighing a total of 16 kg, far exceeding the 7 kg limit allowed under DGCA regulations. When informed of the additional fee, Singh reportedly refused to pay and attempted to access the aerobridge without completing security procedures—a breach of aviation protocol.
A CISF officer intervened and escorted the army personnel back to the gate. What followed was an alleged outburst of violence. SpiceJet claims the officer launched a brutal physical assault on four ground staff members, using punches, kicks, and even a metal queue stand as a weapon.
The impact was severe. One employee suffered a spinal fracture, while another sustained major facial injuries, including bleeding from the nose and mouth after a forceful kick to the face. The airline described the injuries as "grievous," and confirmed all four staff members required immediate medical attention.
The Indian Army has acknowledged the incident and stated that it is cooperating fully with the ongoing civil investigation. The case has drawn widespread attention, sparking conversations around airport staff safety and accountability for violence in public spaces.
Airport authorities and security officials are also reviewing the security breach and assault in light of the seriousness of the injuries caused. The outcome of the investigation is awaited.
