In a shocking case of domestic violence, a man in Delhi’s Rohini area has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife and mother-in-law with a pair of scissors following a heated argument over gifts exchanged during his son’s birthday celebration.
The victims were identified as Priya Sehgal (34) and her mother Kusum Sinha (63). The accused, Yogesh Sehgal, was arrested on Saturday after initially fleeing the crime scene with his two children.
The Quarrel Turns Deadly
According to police, the dispute began on August 28, when Yogesh and his wife Priya celebrated the birthday of their son, Chirag. A quarrel reportedly broke out between the couple over the gifts brought and exchanged at the event.
In the days that followed, the argument escalated, with Priya’s mother Kusum staying back at her daughter’s home to mediate and help resolve the differences. However, tensions grew worse, ultimately culminating in violence.
The Discovery of the Crime
On August 30, Kusum’s son, Megh Sinha, became worried after being unable to reach his mother over phone. He went to his sister’s flat in Rohini, only to find it locked from the outside. Disturbingly, blood stains were visible near the door.
Megh broke open the lock and entered, where he discovered the bodies of his mother and sister lying in a pool of blood. He immediately informed the police, who rushed to the spot.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Investigators recovered a pair of blood-stained scissors, believed to be the murder weapon, along with blood-stained clothes belonging to the accused. A senior police officer confirmed that the crime appeared to be the result of a domestic dispute spiraling out of control.
Yogesh, who had absconded with his children after committing the murders, was tracked down and arrested later the same day. Both the Crime Branch and the Forensic Science Laboratory teams examined the crime scene for further evidence.
Family in Shock
The brutal killings have left the victims’ family devastated. Speaking to media, Kusum’s brother Megh Sinha expressed deep anguish, saying marital quarrels are not uncommon, but resolving them through such horrific violence was “inhuman.”
“We all have disagreements at home, but never in our worst nightmares could we imagine a fight over a child’s birthday gifts ending like this,” he said.
Widening Concern Over Domestic Violence
The double murder has reignited discussions about rising incidents of domestic violence in urban households, where seemingly minor disputes escalate into tragic crimes. Social activists have called for stronger awareness and intervention mechanisms to prevent such situations from spiraling out of control.
Current Status
Yogesh Sehgal remains in police custody and is expected to face charges of double murder. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether there were prior complaints of abuse or marital discord in the household. The two children are currently under the care of relatives.
As Delhi reels from the shocking incident, the case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by unchecked domestic disputes, turning a joyous occasion like a child’s birthday into a tragedy marked by loss and grief.
