New Delhi | July 22, 2025 : Curd, or dahi as it's commonly known in India, is a staple in many households thanks to its numerous health benefits, be it aiding digestion, boosting immunity, or simply cooling the body in scorching summers. However, while curd is packed with probiotics and nutrients like calcium and vitamin B12, consuming it incorrectly can reduce its benefits—or worse, cause health issues. Here are five common mistakes people make while eating curd, and why you should avoid them.

1. Eating Curd at Night

One of the most debated topics in Indian households is whether curd should be eaten at night. While Ayurveda generally advises against it due to curd’s cold and mucus-forming nature, modern science suggests it may be fine for those who are not prone to colds or sinus problems. That said, if you often experience congestion, it's better to avoid curd after sunset. Opt instead for buttermilk or warm milk with turmeric.

2. Adding Salt Instead of Sugar

Many prefer eating curd with salt and spices, especially in dishes like raita. However, excessive salt in curd can lead to bloating or water retention. On the other hand, a little sugar not only balances its acidity but may also improve digestion for some people. Of course, if you're diabetic or watching sugar intake, go plain or use fruit instead.

3. Consuming Curd During a Cold or Fever

Curd is cooling in nature, which means it can aggravate symptoms like cold, cough, or sore throat. Eating curd during such times may thicken mucus and make you feel worse. If you're unwell, it's better to avoid curd altogether and resume it once you're feeling better.

4. Mixing Curd with Fruits

This might come as a surprise since fruit yogurts are everywhere. But Ayurveda advises against combining sour fruits with curd. The combination can disturb digestion and increase toxins (ama) in the body. If you must pair them, go for mildly sweet fruits like mango or banana, and consume them fresh.

5. Storing Curd for Too Long

Fresh curd is your best friend. But leaving it out too long or storing it in the fridge for days can make it overly sour and acidic. Old curd can disturb gut health and may even lead to acidity or indigestion. It’s best to consume homemade curd within 24 hours and ensure it’s stored in a clean container.

The Bottom Line

Curd is a versatile and nutritious food when eaten right. By avoiding these common mistakes, you can enjoy all its goodness without the unintended side effects. Remember when it comes to food, even the healthiest items need to be consumed wisely. So next time you reach for that bowl of dahi, give it the respect (and timing) it deserves!
