पटना : Patna | July 13, 2025 : Bihar is in the grip of a chilling murder spree that has shaken citizens and raised serious concerns about the state’s law and order. A series of killings in multiple districts, including Patna, Begusarai, Sheikhpura, and Lakhisarai has triggered political outrage and public panic.
The violence began with the murder of Surendra Kumar, a rural health official, who was gunned down in Patna’s Pipri locality. Days earlier, a sand trader was also shot in Patna’s Dhana area. In Sheikhpura, BJP leader Surendra Kewat was killed, barely a week after businessman Gopal Khemka was gunned down in a separate case tied to a land dispute. Seven suspects have been arrested in Khemka’s case, while one died in a police encounter.
Tragedy deepened in Begusarai where the bodies of two teenage brothers, Aman and Chaman Kumar, were found brutally beaten and wrapped in plastic sheets in a field. Forensic teams believe they were assaulted before being dumped. The horrific visuals sparked widespread anger online.
In Nalanda, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s home district, a farmer was reportedly murdered over a petty argument. Meanwhile, in Vaishali, a woman allegedly killed her husband with brutal force. In Lakhisarai, a local mukhiya and ward member were shot dead near a local office in another act of broad-daylight violence.
In Chhapra and Saran, earlier this year, triple murders shocked local residents. One involved a family of three parents and a daughter, stabbed to death during the night. Another case involved a man and two daughters allegedly killed by the woman’s lover.
Police are investigating each case individually, but opposition leaders are pointing to a larger collapse of public safety. Chirag Paswan, president of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), said that Bihar’s law and order system has “collapsed completely.” Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge echoed that sentiment, claiming Bihar has become a “crime capital,” citing the murder of eight businessmen and multiple attacks on police officers in just six months.
Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary admitted that while spontaneous killings over personal issues are difficult to prevent, the government is treating all cases with utmost priority. He said Bihar Police is actively cracking down on illegal arms and organized crime.
Authorities have responded with statewide crackdowns. In Patna, the Special Task Force recently foiled a planned murder operation in Digha and Naubatpur, arresting two adults and two juveniles and seizing weapons. Additionally, senior ministers, including Ashok Choudhary, have met with victims' families to assure them of swift justice.
As the investigation deepens, political pressure mounts. The growing unrest could have lasting consequences for Nitish Kumar’s leadership and may influence voter sentiment in the lead-up to state elections. For now, residents across Bihar remain on edge, hoping for quick justice and a return to peace. |
