Patna | July 17, 2025 : In a shocking display of lawlessness, a group of five armed men stormed into a Patna hospital on Wednesday and shot dead a notorious criminal, Chandan Mishra, who was undergoing treatment under police custody. The entire incident was caught on CCTV and has raised serious concerns over security arrangements at medical facilities and the misuse of parole provisions.

Chandan Mishra, a hardened criminal accused in multiple murder cases, was out on parole on medical grounds. He had been admitted to the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) last week due to reported chest pain. He was under the watch of two armed constables when the attackers struck.

The chilling CCTV footage shows five masked men entering the hospital corridor with guns drawn. Within seconds, they located Mishra’s ward, barged in, and fired several rounds at close range. Mishra died on the spot. The attackers fled the hospital immediately after, without resistance.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the assailants may have been rival gang members or associates of someone Mishra had previously targeted. However, officials have not ruled out the possibility of a planned revenge killing orchestrated from outside the prison system.

Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Rajeev Mishra said, “This was a well-planned execution. The assailants knew exactly where the victim was and acted swiftly. We are reviewing CCTV footage and have formed multiple teams to track them down.”

The incident has exposed glaring lapses in security arrangements for high-risk prisoners. Many are now questioning why a criminal with a violent history and several murder charges was allowed parole and admitted to a public hospital with minimal protection.

Eyewitnesses at the hospital described the scene as terrifying. “It was like a scene from a movie. We saw men with guns running in and then loud gunshots. Everyone was screaming and running for cover,” said a hospital staff member.

Security has been tightened at PMCH and across Patna following the killing. All hospitals have been asked to report any high-risk admissions and ensure proper police presence. An internal review of parole and prisoner treatment policies is also underway.

Political reactions poured in quickly. Opposition leaders slammed the Nitish Kumar government, calling it a "total breakdown of law and order." RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said, “When murderers are being killed inside hospitals under police watch, what can common people expect?”

The state government has promised a thorough investigation and assured the public that the killers will be arrested soon. Bihar’s Home Department is also expected to issue new guidelines on hospital security and prisoner parole in the coming days.

For now, the brazen murder inside one of Bihar’s largest hospitals has sent shockwaves through the city and raised serious questions about public safety, prisoner management, and institutional security.
