A tragic and unsettling incident has gripped Mumbai after a young doctor, Dr. Omkar Kavitke, allegedly jumped off the newly built Atal Setu (Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link) bridge on Monday night. The 32-year-old doctor, who worked at JJ Hospital, was last heard by his family when he called his mother and said, “I’ll be home for dinner.”
According to the police, Dr. Kavitke left the hospital around 9 PM in his car and headed towards Navi Mumbai, where he lived with his family in Kalamboli. At around 9:11 PM, he made the call to his mother. Minutes later, his vehicle, a white car was found abandoned on the bridge. His mobile phone was also discovered nearby, but there was no sign of the doctor himself.
No suicide note has been recovered, and officials say they are investigating all angles, including mental health issues, personal stress, or accidental circumstances. As of Wednesday morning, Dr. Kavitke remains missing despite ongoing search operations by the police and Coast Guard teams. Divers have been deployed, and rescue boats are scouring the waters beneath the bridge, but there has been no breakthrough yet.
Dr. Kavitke’s sudden disappearance has left his family, colleagues, and friends in shock. His coworkers at JJ Hospital described him as diligent, soft-spoken, and well-liked. According to sources within the hospital, there had been no prior signs that he was struggling emotionally or mentally. However, police are now examining his call records, recent activities, and any other clues that could provide insight into his state of mind.
Authorities are also reviewing CCTV footage from toll booths and surveillance points along the bridge to better understand the sequence of events leading up to his disappearance. Eyewitnesses have not come forward with definitive information so far, though police are urging anyone who may have been on the Atal Setu around the time of the incident to report any unusual observations.
The incident has reignited conversations around mental health in high-stress professions like medicine. Mental health experts emphasize that sudden emotional decisions can occur even without visible warning signs. They encourage families and institutions to keep lines of communication open and to take mental health support as seriously as physical well-being.
Helplines and support organizations across Mumbai have reiterated the availability of 24/7 services for anyone dealing with emotional distress. Citizens are encouraged to seek help for themselves or their loved ones if there are any signs of emotional withdrawal or unusual behavior.
As the search for Dr. Omkar Kavitke continues, his family is clinging to hope. The words he left them with, I’ll be home for dinner" now echo with painful uncertainty. For now, the city waits and watches, hoping for his safe return or at least some answers to a deeply troubling mystery.
