New Delhi, July 4, 2025 : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 15-day heavy rainfall alert across several Indian states, warning of potential floods, landslides, and urban waterlogging beginning July 5. The forecast, driven by an intensified monsoon phase, includes predictions of heavy to very heavy rainfall in regions such as Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, and parts of the Northeast and Central India.

According to IMD’s bulletin, the most critical period for rainfall activity is expected between July 5 and July 9. During this phase, states like Maharashtra (particularly Mumbai and surrounding Konkan belt), Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi NCR, East Rajasthan, Odisha, and parts of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat are likely to receive intense downpours. Some districts may experience extremely heavy rain, defined as more than 204 mm in 24 hours.

Authorities have been placed on high alert. The warning includes red alerts for multiple districts in Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh, where flooding and landslides have already disrupted regular life in past years. Cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Shimla, Dehradun, and Delhi are likely to face waterlogging, traffic congestion, and infrastructure stress in the coming days.

In Delhi, a yellow alert has been issued, with heavy showers forecast starting Saturday. The national capital has also witnessed erratic pre-monsoon spells over the past week, but the coming wave is expected to be more consistent and intense. The IMD has urged residents to stay indoors during peak rainfall hours and avoid venturing into low-lying areas.

Mountainous states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand face added risks of landslides and flash floods. Tourists have been advised to postpone non-essential travel, especially to higher altitudes. In Himachal, more than 10 districts are under red alert, including Shimla and Mandi, with previous reports of roadblocks and slope failures following moderate rainfall.

Fishermen along the western coast have been warned against venturing into the Arabian Sea due to likely squally weather and rough seas. Wind speeds in some coastal areas may exceed 60 km/h, especially around Goa, Konkan, and Gujarat.

This heavy rain warning follows a surplus rainfall in June, with IMD reporting a 9% increase above the long-period average for the month. The active monsoon conditions are expected to continue into mid-July, aiding crop sowing in some parts of the country, while simultaneously increasing the risk of seasonal flooding in vulnerable regions.

State governments have begun emergency preparations, including deploying disaster response teams, keeping rescue equipment on standby, and issuing school closures in particularly at-risk districts. Urban authorities in cities like Mumbai, Thane, and Nashik are also clearing drains and advising citizens to prepare for potential outages and disruptions.

The IMD continues to monitor weather systems, including monsoon troughs and low-pressure areas that could intensify rainfall. Daily updates are being issued through the IMD’s official website and local authorities have been instructed to disseminate alerts widely.
