Bengaluru, July 3, 2025 : In a deeply disturbing case that has rattled Bengaluru’s tech corridors, an information security engineer working at Infosys has been arrested for allegedly recording women secretly inside a public restroom. The accused, whose identity has been withheld pending further investigation, reportedly placed hidden cameras in a restroom facility located near the company’s campus in Electronic City.

The matter came to light when a woman employee noticed something suspicious under the washbasin area. Upon closer inspection, she discovered what appeared to be a concealed camera lens. She immediately informed campus security, which in turn alerted the local police. Cybercrime investigators were called in, and a detailed sweep of the restroom revealed a small recording device that had been carefully camouflaged.

During the raid of the accused’s residence, investigators found more than 30 video recordings on his personal laptop and external hard drives. The footage, dating back several weeks, showed multiple women in compromising situations, most of whom are believed to be employees or visitors to the premises.

Police officials confirmed that the accused is a mid-level information security engineer, which added a disturbing irony to the case, someone entrusted with protecting digital privacy had violated it in the most personal way.

“This is a serious breach of privacy and a criminal offense under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act,” said Inspector Latha Prasad of the Bengaluru Cybercrime Division. “The individual is currently in custody, and further forensic analysis is underway to determine how the footage was stored and whether any of it was shared or circulated.”

Infosys, one of India’s largest IT services companies, issued an official statement expressing shock and condemnation. “We have zero tolerance for such behavior. The individual in question has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. We are cooperating fully with authorities to ensure justice is served,” the company stated.

The incident has reignited concerns about surveillance abuse and digital safety, especially in workspaces that should be secure and inclusive. Employee unions and women’s rights groups have demanded stricter security protocols, including routine inspections of restrooms and installation of tamper-proof surveillance equipment in public areas, not inside restrooms, to deter such violations.

“This isn't just a workplace issue; it’s a societal wake-up call,” said Priya Menon, spokesperson for a Bengaluru-based digital rights NGO. “If someone working in cybersecurity can commit such an act, it highlights how access to technology can be misused when ethics and accountability are absent.”

The accused has been booked under IPC Sections 354C (voyeurism), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), and relevant provisions of the IT Act. He will be presented in court later this week.

As digital surveillance becomes increasingly ubiquitous, the case has underscored the urgent need for ethical training, awareness, and stringent workplace checks to ensure that privacy remains a protected right, not a privilege.
