नैनीताल :
Nainital, 2 May : Nainital remains tense after a 65-year-old man, Usman, was arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl. The incident occurred on April 12 but came to light on April 30 when the victim’s mother filed a police complaint. The accused was booked under the POCSO Act and jailed.
Following the arrest, violence broke out on Wednesday night. A mob vandalised shops owned by members of the minority community, assaulted staff, and pelted stones at a mosque. Police said no FIR has been filed yet as no official complaint was received, but efforts to identify the culprits are ongoing.
SSP Prahlad Meena said the situation was brought under control before it escalated into a full-blown riot. Additional police have been deployed across the city.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami spoke to the victim’s family, assuring them of full support, security, and swift justice. He directed officials to ensure all necessary aid and ordered financial and educational support for the victim and her sister.
DGP Deepam Seth confirmed the accused’s arrest and emphasized that law and order in Nainital is under control. He urged tourists not to believe rumours and said strict action is being taken against those spreading misinformation online.
Despite the violence, the administration has not yet invoked the new ordinance allowing recovery of damages from rioters.
Locals submitted a memorandum demanding verification of “outsiders” from specific communities, property seizure of the accused, and a special monitoring committee to track suspicious activity. They also called for prioritizing local youth in employment and declaring Nainital a “sensitive cultural zone.”
District Magistrate Vandana resumed the anti-encroachment drive, ordered demolition of illegal constructions, and issued 150 challans. She has also deployed magistrates in sensitive areas and ensured security ahead of Friday prayers.
