According to recent reports, neither player is guaranteed a spot in India’s squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup unless they meet a critical condition laid down by selectors.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly expects both veterans to participate in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, starting December, to stay relevant in the selectors' eyes. This requirement is seen as a means to assess their form and commitment—especially as both players have had limited match practice since the Champions Trophy earlier this year. Without featuring in this domestic one-day competition, their ODI careers may end sooner than fans anticipate—possibly with the upcoming Australia series in October marking their final outing.

Meanwhile, the BCCI plans to have “honest and professional” discussions with both stars to evaluate their fitness, mental readiness, and future aspirations.
