ओडिशा :
Bolangir, Odisha – July 11, 2025 : A shocking video from Odisha has gone viral, showing a tribal couple being tied to a yoke and made to plough a field like oxen. The disturbing incident took place in the Bolangir district and has sparked widespread outrage across the country.
The video, which was reportedly filmed by local villagers, shows the man and woman walking barefoot across a muddy field with a heavy wooden yoke fastened to their shoulders. According to reports, the couple belongs to a tribal community and had borrowed money from a landlord. When they were unable to repay the debt, the landlord allegedly forced them to work as punishment.
Many people on social media expressed anger and demanded immediate action. Human rights activists also condemned the act, calling it “inhuman” and “a clear violation of basic dignity and rights.”
Following public outcry, the local administration took notice of the situation. Bolangir District Collector Bhavesh Chayani said an investigation has been launched. “We have identified the victims and action will be taken against those responsible. Such practices are unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” he told reporters.
Officials from the SC/ST Commission have also stepped in. A case has been registered under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and other sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The couple is now receiving medical attention and counseling support. Local officials have assured that they will also be provided financial aid and protection.
This incident has once again highlighted the deep-rooted problems of bonded labour, exploitation of tribal communities, and lack of awareness in rural areas. Despite strict laws in place, such acts continue to surface from time to time, raising serious questions about enforcement and accountability.
Many are now demanding stronger monitoring in rural parts of Odisha and stricter punishments for such inhuman acts. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also taken suo moto cognizance of the matter and asked for a detailed report from the state government within 72 hours.
While the video has shocked the nation, many hope that it will lead to real change and justice for the couple. For now, the incident stands as a painful reminder of the urgent need for protecting the most vulnerable citizens of our society.
