Mcleodganj | July 6, 2025 : The serene hills of Mcleodganj in Himachal Pradesh turned into a vibrant celebration ground today as His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama celebrated his 90th birthday. The spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism was joined by thousands of followers, dignitaries, monks, and well-wishers from around the world, with tributes pouring in across continents.

Known globally as a symbol of peace, compassion, and non-violence, the Dalai Lama has spent more than six decades in exile in India following the 1959 Tibetan uprising. His long-standing advocacy for Tibetan autonomy and global harmony has earned him immense respect and a Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.

The celebrations began early in the morning at the Tsuglagkhang Complex, the main temple in Mcleodganj, with special prayers, traditional dances, and a ceremonial cake-cutting. The Dalai Lama, in his familiar maroon robes, appeared in good spirits as he addressed the gathering.

“There are many ways the institution of the Dalai Lama could evolve,” he reiterated in his birthday speech, leaving the door open for future surprises. “My primary concern is the preservation of Tibetan culture, not titles.”

Security in Mcleodganj was tight, with additional deployments by local authorities due to the influx of international visitors and concerns over potential political tensions. Celebrations are expected to continue throughout the day and will kick off a year-long series of events commemorating the Dalai Lama’s teachings and legacy.

Cultural performances, exhibitions, and public dialogues on non-violence and interfaith harmony are scheduled across major Indian cities and Tibetan settlements worldwide.

The Indian government also extended formal greetings. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi both shared messages acknowledging the Dalai Lama’s contributions to peace and human values.
