New Delhi, 2 June : Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the Indian contingent for their outstanding performance at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships, emphasizing that their “hard work and determination were clearly visible” throughout the competition.

India concluded the tournament, held in Gumi, South Korea, with an impressive haul of 24 medals — eight gold, 10 silver, and six bronze — securing second place in the overall medal standings behind China.

PM Modi shared on X, “India is proud of our contingent for their stupendous performance at the recently held 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in South Korea. The hard work and determination of every athlete were clearly visible throughout the tournament. Best wishes to the athletes for their future endeavours.”

Over 60 Indian athletes participated in the championships, which took place from May 27 to 31. The 26th edition featured over 2,000 competitors, with Indians taking part in 30 medal events — including 15 men’s events, 14 women’s events, and one mixed relay — over five days of action.

India’s medal tally was initiated by Servin Sebastian, who claimed a bronze in the men’s 20km race walk on the opening day.

Gulveer Singh led the charge with a gold in the men’s 10,000m and followed it up with another gold in the 5,000m. Rupal Chaudhary became the first Indian woman to bag a medal at the event, earning silver in the 400m sprint.

The Indian 4x400m mixed relay team successfully defended their title, while the women’s 4x400m relay team also secured gold.

Jyothi Yarraji retained her title in the women’s 100m hurdles with a powerful finish, while Avinash Sable made history as the first Indian man in 36 years to win gold in the steeplechase at the Asian Athletics Championships.

National records were set by Animesh Kujur in the 200m and Parul Chaudhary in the 3000m steeplechase.

Tejaswin Shankar became the first Indian to earn two medals in decathlon at the Asian Championships, scoring 7,618 points to win silver — adding to his 2023 bronze.

In the women’s long jump, Ancy Sojan (6.33m) and Shaili Singh (6.30m) secured the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
