Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, known for his frank and often unfiltered views, stirred debate once again with his latest comments on politics and leadership. Speaking at an event in Nagpur, Gadkari said, “Jo logon ko sabse acchha moorkh bana sakta hai, wahi sabse acchha neta ho sakta hai” (One who can best fool the people is the best leader).
His statement immediately triggered sharp reactions across political and public circles. Gadkari explained that while speaking grandly is easy, actually delivering results is far more challenging. He observed that in his field of work, “telling the truth wholeheartedly is discouraged,” hinting at the harsh realities of political life.
Citing a Marathi proverb, “Haose, navse, gavse” (everyone has their own styles and motives), he underlined that often the leader who convinces people—even through deception—emerges successful. Yet, Gadkari clarified that he personally believes truth, honesty, and credibility remain the strongest values in society.
Quoting the Bhagavad Gita, he said, “Satyameva Jayate—truth is the ultimate victor.” Gadkari also warned against taking shortcuts, remarking, “Shortcuts cut you short.” He emphasized that while some may win temporary gains through manipulation, long-lasting respect can only be earned through integrity and dedication.
The remark has sparked widespread debate. Critics argue that his words reflect the growing cynicism in Indian politics, while supporters claim he was merely highlighting a bitter reality rather than endorsing it. Gadkari’s comments, however, have once again reinforced his image as a politician unafraid to speak uncomfortable truths, even if they ruffle feathers.
With elections looming, his statement is likely to remain in discussion, raising questions about what truly defines leadership in India today.
