At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a firm message condemning terrorism, highlighting India’s ongoing struggle against cross-border terror, and calling for a united global stance against such threats. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was present during Modi’s remarks, as the Indian leader cited the recent Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 innocent civilians were killed.

Addressing the summit, PM Modi thanked nations that stood with India during difficult times and criticized countries that openly support terrorism. He emphasized that terrorism is not merely a national concern but a challenge for all humanity, affecting peace, security, and development worldwide. “Security, peace, and stability are critical for every country’s development. Terrorism, separatism, and radicalism are big challenges on this path. We must clearly oppose terrorism in all its forms and colours,” he said.

The Prime Minister underscored India’s decades-long battle against terrorism, highlighting the pain suffered by countless families. “Recently, we witnessed a very ugly form of terrorism in Pahalgam. I thank friends who stood with us during this crisis. This was not just an attack on India’s soul, but an open challenge to every country believing in humanity. Can open support for terrorism by some countries ever be acceptable?” Modi asked.

He stressed that double standards in dealing with terrorism are unacceptable and called for unity among SCO members to ensure a collective response. The regional group, Modi noted, has a foundation built on Security, Connectivity, and Opportunity. He emphasized that security is the first pillar and a prerequisite for the well-being and development of all member nations.

Modi’s remarks came nearly four months after the Pahalgam attack and India’s counterstrike, Operation Sindoor, underlining the importance of a consistent and uncompromising stance against terrorism. He highlighted that positive international cooperation and shared responsibility are essential in addressing the global menace of terror.

While Shehbaz Sharif was present, the Indian Prime Minister’s remarks clearly conveyed India’s stance against countries that indirectly or directly support terrorism. The speech also highlighted the broader agenda of the SCO in connecting Eurasian nations and promoting stability, development, and security in the region.

As the summit concludes, all eyes are on the joint statement to see whether SCO members, including major powers like China and Russia, will align with India’s firm position. Modi’s unequivocal message reaffirmed that India will continue to prioritize national and regional security while advocating for zero tolerance against terrorism in all its forms.
