Washington, Aug 18, 2025 : The United States continues to keep a close watch on the security situation between India and Pakistan, said Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday. Speaking to NBC News, Rubio stressed that Washington monitors developments “every single day,” cautioning that ceasefires between rival nations can collapse without warning.

Rubio’s remarks echoed earlier claims made by US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly said that his administration helped prevent a nuclear escalation between India and Pakistan earlier this year.

Ceasefire Under Scrutiny

India has maintained that its military conflict with Pakistan ended in May after Islamabad sought a ceasefire following heavy battlefield losses. However, Pakistan has supported Trump’s assertion that the United States played a decisive role in halting the confrontation, with its leaders crediting the American President for drawing global attention.

“One of the complications of ceasefires is maintaining them, which is very difficult. Every single day, we are keeping an eye on what is happening between Pakistan and India,” Rubio said.

Drawing a parallel with Russia and Ukraine, he added, “The only way to have a ceasefire is for both sides to agree to stop firing at one another. Ceasefires can fall apart very quickly, especially after years of conflict. What we are aiming for is not just a temporary truce, but a sustainable peace deal.”

Trump’s Role Questioned

In a separate interview with Fox Business, Rubio once again mentioned the India-Pakistan conflict, highlighting Trump’s repeated claim of brokering peace between the two South Asian neighbors.

“We are very fortunate to have a President who has made peace a priority,” Rubio said, citing examples from Cambodia, Thailand, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, alongside India and Pakistan.

Since May 10, Trump has asserted at least 40 times that he “settled” tensions between India and Pakistan through late-night talks mediated by Washington. According to Trump, he told both nations that the US would enhance trade ties if they stopped fighting.

India’s Firm Denial

India has consistently rejected suggestions of foreign mediation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has clarified in Parliament that no leader from any country asked India to halt Operation Sindoor, the military action conducted earlier this year.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has also dismissed Trump’s version, stating unequivocally that there was no third-party involvement in India’s decision to stop hostilities with Pakistan. He emphasized that the ceasefire had no link to trade negotiations, contradicting Trump’s remarks.

Pakistan’s Alignment with US

Islamabad, on the other hand, has echoed Trump’s narrative, attributing the ceasefire to his intervention. Analysts suggest Pakistan’s position is aimed at currying favor with Washington, particularly at a time when the country faces economic and diplomatic challenges.

Since May, Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir has visited the US twice. Washington recently announced an oil deal with Islamabad, further underlining the strengthening ties between the two nations.

Despite Trump’s claims, India continues to assert that its military and diplomatic decisions remain independent, and that no external power played a role in its ceasefire with Pakistan.
