BENGALURU, AUGUST 10 –Bengaluru witnessed a major leap in public transportation today as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-anticipated Yellow Line of Namma Metro, connecting RV Road in South Bengaluru to Bommasandra in the east. Spanning 19.15 km with 16 elevated stations, the Rs 7,160 crore corridor is expected to serve up to eight lakh commuters daily.

Described by authorities as a “game-changer” for the city’s southern transport network, the Yellow Line links key residential neighbourhoods with major employment hubs, including Silk Board Junction, BTM Layout, Electronic City, and Bommasandra Industrial Area—home to companies like Infosys, Biocon, and TCS. The corridor aims to directly connect tech parks, industrial zones, and densely populated areas, reducing dependence on road travel and alleviating traffic at some of Bengaluru’s worst choke points, especially Silk Board Junction.

Faster Commutes and Reduced Congestion
Currently, peak-hour travel from central or southern Bengaluru to Electronic City can take between 90 minutes and two hours by road. With the Yellow Line, this journey will take roughly 45 minutes, offering significant time savings for thousands of daily commuters.

The new line’s seamless integration with other Namma Metro routes will also improve connectivity for passengers travelling across the city. Notably, RV Road station offers interchange with the Green Line, while Jayadeva Hospital station will become an interchange with the upcoming Pink Line—possibly the tallest metro station in the network.

Operations to Begin August 11
Commercial services on the Yellow Line will start Monday, August 11. Initially, three driverless trains will operate at 25-minute intervals between 5:00 am and 11:00 pm. Officials plan to improve frequency to every 20 minutes later this month as more trains are introduced.

The fare structure is consistent with existing Namma Metro pricing. Short trips, such as RV Road to Jayadeva, will cost Rs 10, while the longest journey—Whitefield (Purple Line) to Bommasandra (Yellow Line)—will cost Rs 90.

Broader Metro Expansion Plans
At the same event, PM Modi flagged off the Bengaluru–Belagavi Vande Bharat Express and laid the foundation stone for Phase 3 of Namma Metro—a 44.65-km expansion worth Rs 15,610 crore. This phase is projected to benefit an additional 25 lakh residents in southern Bengaluru.

The public function was held at the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bengaluru campus in Electronic City, marking a significant day for the city’s transportation future. With the Yellow Line now operational, Bengaluru’s metro network takes another step toward easing its notorious traffic woes and providing faster, greener, and more reliable public transit options.
