Karbala, Iraq - August 10, 2025 - More than 600 Shiite pilgrims were hospitalised with breathing difficulties after inhaling chlorine gas from a leak at a water treatment facility between the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala, Iraqi authorities confirmed on Sunday.

The incident occurred overnight on the Karbala-Najaf road, a key route for pilgrims traveling to mark Arbaeen, the 40-day mourning period commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Mohammed. The annual event attracts millions of Shiite Muslims from Iraq and across the world to Karbala, home to the revered shrines of Imam Hussein and his brother Abbas.

According to a brief statement from Iraq’s Health Ministry, 621 cases of asphyxia were recorded as a direct result of chlorine inhalation. Victims were rushed to nearby hospitals and treated for respiratory distress. Fortunately, officials reported that all patients were discharged in stable condition after receiving appropriate medical care.

“All have received the necessary care and left the hospital in good health,” the ministry said.

Security forces responsible for safeguarding pilgrims said the leak originated from a water station situated along the main pilgrimage route. Preliminary investigations suggest that outdated infrastructure and inadequate safety protocols may have contributed to the mishap.

Infrastructure and Safety Concerns
Much of Iraq’s public infrastructure remains fragile after decades of conflict, political instability, and corruption. Adherence to safety standards is often lax, particularly in smaller cities and rural areas. Experts warn that the combination of neglected maintenance and high public gatherings during religious events can make such accidents more likely.

This latest incident comes just weeks after another tragedy — a massive fire at a shopping mall in Kut in July, which killed more than 60 people, many from smoke inhalation after being trapped in bathrooms. The two events highlight Iraq’s ongoing struggles to ensure public safety during mass gatherings and in crowded public spaces.

Pilgrimage Underway Despite the Scare
Despite the chlorine leak, the Arbaeen pilgrimage is proceeding as planned. Security and health officials have deployed additional personnel to monitor the route and inspect infrastructure to prevent similar incidents. Mobile clinics and first-aid units have been stationed along key stretches of the road between Najaf and Karbala.

For many pilgrims, the scare has not deterred their religious commitment. “We came here for Imam Hussein. Even if there is danger, we will continue,” said Ali, a pilgrim from Baghdad. Others expressed gratitude for the quick medical response, which they believe prevented a tragedy.

Authorities have promised a full investigation into the chlorine leak and pledged to review safety measures at public utilities, especially those serving large-scale events.

With millions expected to pass through Karbala in the coming weeks, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust emergency preparedness and strict adherence to safety regulations — both to protect pilgrims and to safeguard Iraq’s vital religious tourism sector.
