Bengaluru | August 10, 2025 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the much-awaited Yellow Line of the Bangalore Metro and flagged off a new Vande Bharat Express between Bengaluru and Belagavi during his nearly four-hour visit to the city. The day also saw the laying of the foundation stone for the ambitious Bangalore Metro Phase-3 project, marking another milestone in Bengaluru’s transport infrastructure expansion.

A Busy Itinerary in the Silicon City
PM Modi arrived at HAL Airport at 10:30 am before heading to KSR Bengaluru City railway station. There, he flagged off the Vande Bharat Express connecting KSR Bengaluru to Belagavi, a move aimed at improving intercity connectivity and reducing travel time between the two Karnataka cities.

In addition to this, the Prime Minister virtually launched two more Vande Bharat trains: the Amritsar–Sri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra route and the Ajni (Nagpur)–Pune route, further extending the country’s high-speed rail network.

Inauguration of the Yellow Line Metro
From the railway station, PM Modi travelled to RV Road (Ragigudda) metro station to inaugurate the Yellow Line of the Bangalore Metro, part of Phase-2 of the project. Between 11:45 am and 12:50 pm, he officially launched the 19.15-km stretch connecting RV Road (Ragigudda) to Bommasandra, which includes 16 stations and has been constructed at a cost of around ₹7,160 crore.

The Prime Minister also took a metro ride to the Electronic City station, symbolising the government’s push towards modern, eco-friendly urban mobility solutions.

With this addition, the operational metro network in Bengaluru now spans over 96 km, easing commutes for a large number of residents and reducing congestion on key traffic-heavy routes such as Hosur Road, Silk Board Junction, and Electronics City Junction.

Foundation Stone for Metro Phase-3
Later, PM Modi visited the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bengaluru, where he addressed a public gathering and laid the foundation stone for the Bangalore Metro Phase-3 project.

Also referred to as the Orange Line, Phase-3 will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹15,611 crore and will feature two corridors:

JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura (32.15 km)

Hosahalli to Kadabagere (12.5 km)

The project will cover more than 44 km and include 31 elevated stations, aiming to connect residential, industrial, commercial, and educational hubs across the city.

Officials said Phase-3 will address the city’s growing transportation needs, especially as Bengaluru continues to expand as a global IT and manufacturing hub.

Boost to Bengaluru’s Urban Mobility
The launch of the Yellow Line is expected to provide relief to commuters in some of Bengaluru’s most congested areas. Officials highlighted that improved metro connectivity will not only reduce travel time but also promote a shift from private vehicles to public transport, contributing to lower emissions and cleaner air.

The combination of the Yellow Line’s operational launch and the foundation stone for Phase-3 underscores the government’s commitment to large-scale infrastructure development in urban areas.

PM Modi concluded his visit by returning to HAL Airport via helicopter and departing for Delhi at 2:45 pm. With the day’s inaugurations and announcements, Bengaluru’s transportation map is set for a transformative shift, promising faster, cleaner, and more connected travel for millions of residents.
