July 22, 2025 | New Delhi : As the holy month of Sawan continues, thousands of Lord Shiva’s devotees are visiting temples across Uttar Pradesh (UP) in large numbers. The spiritual energy in the state is at its peak, with famous Shiva temples like Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi, Baba Baidyanath Dham, and others witnessing a huge influx of pilgrims.
This year, the Kanwar Yatra - a special religious journey during Sawan has added to the festive atmosphere. Dressed in saffron, Kanwariyas (devotees of Lord Shiva) are walking barefoot for miles to collect holy Ganga water from Haridwar and Braj Ghat, which they will offer to Shiva temples back home.
High Demand for Religious Items
The arrival of lakhs of devotees has boosted the local economy. Markets in Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Haridwar are packed with shoppers. Items like kanwars (decorated pots for carrying holy water), rudraksha beads, trishuls (tridents), damrus, and Kanwariya outfits are selling fast.
A local woman shopkeeper from Prayagraj said, “Business is very good this time. The demand for puja items has gone up since the Yatra began. The ghats built by PM Modi and CM Yogi are very helpful; no leader has made such facilities before.”
Government's Massive Arrangements
To manage the large crowds, the UP government has made strong security arrangements. As per the DGP Rajiv Krishna, the state has deployed:
587 gazetted officers
2,040 inspectors
13,520 sub-inspectors
39,965 constables and head constables
Over 10,000 women police personnel
Police teams and UP-112 patrol vehicles are working round-the-clock to maintain peace and safety. Strict guidelines have been issued for devotees—such as walking only on the left side of highways and setting up food/rest camps away from roads. Speeding and reckless driving are being strictly monitored.
Focus on Cleanliness and Safety
Special care is being taken for women Kanwariyas, with additional safety and health checks. Food camps are being monitored for hygiene, and police teams are reporting any garbage spots immediately to the local municipal teams for quick cleanup.
In Delhi, the Kanwar Yatra is also in full swing. Thousands of devotees from Rajasthan, Haryana, and UP are reaching the national capital carrying Ganga jal. The Delhi government has put up welcome gates and support stations offering water, first aid, and rest areas.
Over 3,000 police and paramilitary personnel are on duty in Delhi to ensure the smooth movement of pilgrims.
Pushp Varsha and Spiritual Celebrations
Many temples and public camps are greeting devotees with "Pushp Varsha" (flower showers) and chants of "Bol Bam" fill the air. These scenes reflect the deep faith and devotion that define the month of Sawan.
As the Kanwar Yatra continues, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has warned of strict action against anyone causing trouble during the Yatra. He said that posters of miscreants will be displayed in public to prevent future disturbances.
This year's Sawan celebrations show a mix of faith, festivity, and flawless management, making it one of the most memorable spiritual events in recent times.
