New Delhi | July 9, 2025 : The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised fresh concerns over the growing health risks faced by women with both diabetes and a high body mass index (BMI). According to a recent global health study, women in this category face a significantly higher chance of developing breast cancer compared to those with a normal BMI and no diabetes.

A high BMI, which typically signals overweight or obesity, is already known to contribute to various health issues. But in postmenopausal women, it plays a more dangerous role by increasing the amount of estrogen produced by fat tissue. Higher levels of estrogen have been closely linked to the development of breast cancer. Additionally, obesity often triggers chronic inflammation in the body, which can damage cells and raise the likelihood of cancerous growths.

Diabetes, particularly Type 2, further complicates the situation. Women with this condition already have increased levels of blood sugar and insulin. These imbalances are believed to promote the growth of certain cancer cells and reduce the body’s natural ability to eliminate damaged cells. When diabetes and high BMI are combined, their effects can multiply, creating a dangerous environment within the body that makes it more likely for cancer to develop.

Doctors warn that women with both conditions are not only more likely to develop breast cancer but may also face more aggressive forms of the disease and poorer outcomes. Studies from various countries have consistently shown that women with a BMI above 30 and a history of diabetes face a much higher risk of breast cancer than the general population.

This has prompted health officials and experts to call for more proactive health screenings. Regular breast cancer screenings, such as mammograms, should be prioritized for women who fall into this high-risk group. At the same time, there is a strong push for public health awareness campaigns to educate women about the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and keeping blood sugar levels under control.

Experts recommend simple but effective lifestyle changes that can help reduce the risk. These include eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, regular physical activity, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and managing stress. For those already diagnosed with diabetes, strict control of blood sugar through medication and healthy habits can also lower the chance of developing breast cancer.

The WHO's warning comes at a time when rates of both obesity and diabetes are rising rapidly, especially in urban and semi-urban parts of countries like India. With more women entering the postmenopausal stage of life, the threat of breast cancer linked to these conditions is becoming increasingly urgent.

Medical professionals are urging both individuals and governments to take action now. By promoting better nutrition, encouraging exercise, and providing regular screenings, the risk can be managed possibly even reduced significantly. The message is clear: while the danger is serious, it is not without solutions. Early detection and prevention remain the most effective weapons in this growing health battle.
