Italian fashion legend Giorgio Armani, the man who redefined elegance with his unstructured tailoring and timeless designs, has died at the age of 91. The fashion house confirmed his passing in a statement on Thursday, saying he died peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones.
Armani, who was widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in global fashion, had missed his June runway shows while recovering from an undisclosed illness. His absence then had sparked concerns, though the house remained tight-lipped about his health.
In an emotional Instagram post, the Armani Group announced: “With infinite condolences,#GiorgioArmani #FashionIcon #Milan #Legend #RIP #StyleForever #ItalianElegance the Armani Group announces the passing of its inventor, founder and tireless engine: Giorgio Armani. Tireless, he has worked until the last days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections and always-new projects.”
Born in 1934, Armani rose to fame in the 1970s with a groundbreaking approach to ready-to-wear fashion. His fluid jackets, relaxed lines, and sophisticated minimalism reshaped modern wardrobes and propelled Milan into the global spotlight. Beyond fashion, his brand expanded into lifestyle, fragrance, interiors, and even hospitality, embodying a vision of refined Italian luxury.
Over the years, Armani was not just a designer but also a philanthropist, deeply committed to Milan, his home city. The company, which he built independently over five decades, remains a symbol of creativity, precision, and enduring elegance.
A public burning room will be open on September 6–7 at Via Bergognone 59 in Milan, near the Armani/Teatro, allowing admirers to pay their respects. In accordance with his wishes, the funeral will be private.
Armani had been planning a major celebration of the fashion house’s 50th anniversary during Milan Fashion Week later this month. His passing marks the end of an era in global fashion.
