New Delhi | July 14, 2025 : Indian badminton icon Saina Nehwal, an Olympic bronze medalist and former world number one, has announced her separation from her husband, Parupalli Kashyap, after nearly seven years of marriage. The news came through a heartfelt Instagram post shared by Nehwal on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

In her post, Nehwal wrote, “Life takes us in different directions sometimes. After much thought and consideration, Kashyap and I have decided to part ways. We’re choosing peace, growth, and healing — for ourselves and each other. I’m grateful for the memories and wish nothing but the best moving forward. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy during this time.”

Saina and Kashyap, both products of the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad, had been one of India’s most celebrated sports couples. They married in December 2018 after over a decade of friendship and shared training experiences on the international badminton circuit.

Their relationship had always been low-profile, with both athletes focusing primarily on their sport. Over the years, they were frequently seen supporting each other during major tournaments and training sessions. The news of their separation has left fans surprised but has also been met with messages of support and respect for their mature and dignified approach.

Parupalli Kashyap, a former world number six and Commonwealth Games gold medalist, has yet to release a public statement. Sources close to the couple have indicated that the decision was mutual and rooted in personal growth rather than any conflict.

Saina Nehwal, 35, has had a decorated career that includes being the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in badminton, securing bronze at the London 2012 Olympics. She also reached the world number one ranking in April 2015, a feat unmatched by any other Indian female shuttler to date. Her accolades also include multiple Superseries titles, Commonwealth Games medals, and national honors such as the Padma Bhushan.

In recent years, Saina has battled injuries, including chronic knee issues and arthritis, which have kept her off the professional circuit for extended periods. She has hinted at retirement, stating earlier this year that 2025 might be her final year in competitive badminton.

Kashyap, who formally retired from international play in 2024, has transitioned into coaching and currently mentors young shuttlers at the Gopichand Academy. His technical knowledge and experience continue to benefit India’s rising badminton stars.

The separation announcement has also sparked broader discussions around the personal challenges faced by professional athletes, particularly those who have spent years in the public eye. While both Nehwal and Kashyap have emphasized privacy, the sporting world has rallied behind them with tributes to their individual journeys and their joint contributions to Indian badminton.

As the couple moves into separate chapters of their lives, fans are hoping both continue to thrive on and off the court. Their legacy as champions remains untarnished, and their decision, as Nehwal expressed, reflects courage, clarity, and mutual respect.
