Heavy rainfall lashed parts of the Delhi-NCR region on Sunday morning, bringing much-needed relief from the summer heat while also disrupting daily life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Ghaziabad and an orange alert for Noida (Gautam Buddh Nagar), cautioning residents about the risk of waterlogging, traffic jams, and low visibility. The red alert in Ghaziabad remained valid till 11 am.
Despite the severe warnings for the adjoining Uttar Pradesh cities, Delhi itself was not placed under any weather alert, according to IMD’s nowcast. However, the capital has been experiencing intermittent heavy spells over the past week, making this August one of the coolest in over a decade. Data from the IMD reveals that the average maximum temperature in Delhi till Saturday stood at 33.2°C — the lowest for August since 2012, when it was 33.1°C. In contrast, last year’s August average was 34.1°C, while in 2023 it was 35.4°C.
Residents of Ghaziabad and Noida woke up to waterlogged roads, overflowing drains, and a noticeable dip in temperatures on Sunday morning. Commuters faced difficulties navigating flooded stretches, especially in low-lying areas. The IMD has advised people to stay indoors where possible, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain alert for further updates.
The pleasant yet unusual chill in the air has come as a surprise to many, making outdoor conditions more comfortable despite the rain-induced disruptions. Experts suggest that continued rainfall over the coming days may further bring down temperatures, extending the cooler-than-usual spell across the region.
