New Delhi | 30 March 2026 As tensions escalate in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, United States, and Israel, concerns are growing over potential disruptions to global internet connectivity. Experts and observers have warned that submarine communication cables in the Red Sea , a critical route for international data traffic could be at risk if the conflict intensifies further. The involvement of the Houthis has added to these concerns, especially after past threats regarding possible damage to these cables. The fears stem partly from a similar incident in September 2025, when multiple undersea fibre optic cables were accidentally damaged due to a ship’s anchor. The disruption affected several countries across West and South Asia, causing internet slowdowns and outages. According to the International Cable Protection Committee, such incidents are not uncommon, but the current geopolitical situation raises the risk of deliberate interference. These Red Sea cables play a vital role in supporting global digital infrastructure, including financial transactions, cloud computing, emails, video conferencing, and artificial intelligence services. Nearly 95 percent of international data traffic is transmitted through undersea cables, making them a backbone of the modern digital economy. The country relies heavily on these cables, with major landing stations located in cities such as Mumbai and Chennai handling a large portion of data traffic.
