Mamata Banerjee’s Relative Found Dead in Birbhum

New Delhi, September 01, 2026 The death of 28-year-old Brishti Mukherjee, a relative of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has prompted a police investigation in Birbhum. Brishti Mukherjee, daughter of Mamata Banerjee’s cousin Nihar Mukherjee, was found hanging at her home in Kusumba village in Birbhum district on Tuesday. Police have begun an investigation into the case. Mukherjee had faced allegations related to the primary teacher recruitment scam. She and her husband had also filed for divorce. According to her family members, she had been suffering from depression for the past few years and was undergoing treatment. Her body has been sent to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Rampurhat police are investigating the circumstances behind her death, with further details expected after the completion of the required procedures. “The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. An investigation is underway. The circumstances leading to the death will be established after the post-mortem and other procedural inquiries,” a police officer told.
