Telangana Government Reimburses ₹7,400 Crore to RTC for Women’s Free Travel Scheme

Hyderabad, Telangana – September 20, 2025 The Telangana government has reimbursed a substantial ₹7,400 crore to the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC), covering the costs of the state's ambitious free bus travel scheme for women. This initiative, launched by the Congress-led administration, aims to provide free transportation to women across the state, facilitating their mobility and access to various services. Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka announced the reimbursement during a program organized to distribute interest-free loans to Women's Self-Help Groups. He highlighted that, despite initial skepticism from opposition parties regarding the feasibility of providing ₹20,000 crore in annual interest-free loans, the government had already disbursed ₹21,632 crore in the first year, setting a record and demonstrating its commitment to women's empowerment. The free bus travel scheme has been well-received by women across Telangana, with over 222.5 crore free bus journeys availed by beneficiaries. The reimbursement of ₹7,400 crore to TSRTC has significantly reduced the financial burden on women commuters, saving them nearly ₹7,000 crore in travel expenses. In addition to the free travel initiative, the state government is supporting women's groups in purchasing buses, which are then leased to the RTC. This move not only empowers women economically but also contributes to the growth of the public transportation sector in Telangana. The government's focus on welfare measures extends beyond transportation. Currently, 96 lakh families in Telangana are receiving six kilograms of fine rice per person free of cost every month, a program that has been instrumental in alleviating food insecurity among the state's population. These initiatives reflect the government's commitment to social welfare and women's empowerment, aiming to create a more inclusive and equitable society in Telangana.
