Heavy Rain Predicted for Four Southern Tamil Nadu Districts; Thunderstorms Likely in Isolated Areas

Chennai | November 12, 2025 The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall for four southern districts of Tamil Nadu — Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, and Kanyakumari — on Wednesday, as a trough of low pressure continues to persist over the southeast Arabian Sea. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, this weather disturbance is expected to cause widespread rain along the southern coastal belt, especially in the hilly regions of Tirunelveli. The IMD also warned that certain areas in the Western Ghats region could experience intense downpours, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds during the evening. “The trough of low pressure over the southeast Arabian Sea continues to influence weather patterns over southern Tamil Nadu. As a result, isolated places in Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, and Kanyakumari may receive heavy rainfall today,” said an official statement from the RMC. Meanwhile, Chennai is likely to see partly cloudy skies, with a chance of light to moderate rain or thundershowers in a few areas, particularly towards late afternoon or night. The maximum temperature is expected to reach around 32°C, while the minimum may stay close to 26°C. Unlike the previous week, no weather warnings have been issued for fishermen operating along the Tamil Nadu coast or nearby sea regions. Wind speeds are expected to remain moderate, and sea conditions will generally stay calm. However, officials have urged fishermen to remain alert for new forecasts, as atmospheric changes over the Bay of Bengal could alter the situation in the coming days. The IMD also noted that the prevailing easterly wind pattern could bring occasional light showers to several southern and interior districts through the middle of the week. Authorities have urged residents, especially those living in low-lying areas, to be cautious, as isolated heavy spells may cause temporary waterlogging and minor flooding in vulnerable zones. With the northeast monsoon currently active across Tamil Nadu, unsettled weather conditions are expected to continue in southern districts over the next few days. Officials said they are monitoring rainfall closely and will issue timely updates if the situation intensifies. Meteorologists have advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain hours, ensure proper drainage around homes, and stay tuned to IMD weather alerts for the latest updates. The coming week is expected to bring intermittent rain, mainly over coastal and southern parts of the state, while interior regions could see short, scattered showers. As the northeast monsoon continues to strengthen, Tamil Nadu’s southern districts are likely to see consistent rainfall patterns, marking another active phase of the seasonal downpour.
