Meghalaya to Launch First-Ever Women’s Football League

In a historic move for women's sports in the state, Meghalaya is set to launch its first-ever women's football league today, September 20, 2025. The Meghalaya Women's State League (MWSL) aims to provide a platform for female footballers to showcase their talent and promote the sport among women in the region. The league will feature 13 teams representing eight district associations across the state. Matches will be held in three zones: Khliehriat, Shillong, and Tyrsad, with the opening ceremony scheduled at the SSA Stadium in Shillong. The MWSL is modeled after the men's Meghalaya State League, which has been instrumental in developing football at the grassroots level in the state. The launch of the MWSL is expected to have a significant impact on the development of women's football in Meghalaya. It will not only provide young women with opportunities to participate in organized football but also inspire more girls to take up the sport. The league is seen as a step toward achieving gender equality in sports and empowering women through physical activity. The Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) has expressed its commitment to supporting the league and ensuring its success. The MFA has been working closely with district associations to facilitate the formation of teams and organize matches. Coaches and officials have been trained to maintain high standards of play and ensure the smooth conduct of the league. The MWSL is anticipated to serve as a feeder tournament for the Indian Women's League (IWL), the premier professional women's football league in India. By providing a competitive platform, the MWSL aims to identify and nurture talent that can represent Meghalaya at the national level. As the league kicks off today, all eyes will be on the performances of the teams and players, marking a new chapter in the history of women's football in Meghalaya. The successful execution of the MWSL could pave the way for similar initiatives in other northeastern states, contributing to the overall growth of women's sports in the region.
