Eight Ministers Resign Ahead of Cabinet Reshuffle in Meghalaya.

Shillong, September 16, 2025 : In Meghalaya, a major political change is underway. Eight ministers in the Meghalaya government have resigned their posts ahead of an impending cabinet reshuffle. The move is part of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s reorganisation of the state’s coalition government (Meghalaya Democratic Alliance), expected to be formalized later today. Today’s resignations include ministers from multiple parties in the alliance: Ampareen Lyngdoh, Comingone Ymbon, Rakkam A. Sangma, Abu Taher Mondal (all from the NPP), Paul Lyngdoh and Kyrmen Shylla (UDP), Shakliar Warjri (HSPDP) and AL Hek (BJP). Replacing them are likely new faces across the coalition. Names being floated for induction include Sosthenes Sohtun (from NPP), Timothy D. Shira, Wailadmiki Passah, Brening A. Sangma, Metbah Lyngdoh, Lahkmen Rymbui, Sanbor Shullai, and Methodius Dkhar. The new ministers will be sworn in at 5 p.m. at Raj Bhavan. The reshuffle is being seen not just as a routine change but as a strategic move. Analysts believe it reflects shifting political dynamics within the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance — balancing party interests, regional representation, and seniority while also managing public perceptions. Some ministers being dropped are considered senior in their parties, and their removal has raised questions from opposition parties and political observers about intra-coalition tensions. One particular point of concern among critics is that the new cabinet, as expected, will have no women ministers following the exit of Ampareen Lyngdoh. Additionally, some districts may feel under-represented if their ministers or MLAs are not included in the reshuffled ministry. The ruling coalition has defended the reshuffle, saying it will help bring fresh energy and better governance. The Chief Minister’s office has noted that the changes will align ministerial responsibilities more closely with performance and public expectations. As for timing: the resignations have already been submitted to Governor C. H. Vijayashankar, with the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for later in the day. All eyes are on the new line-up and how effectively it can manage governance, delivery, and political stability going forward.
