Kerala Assembly Session Opens with Tributes to Late Leaders

The session, which is dedicated primarily to law-making, was adjourned for the day after the House paid homage to former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, former Speaker P.P. Thankachan, and Peermade MLA Vazhoor Soman.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in his address, remembered V.S. Achuthanandan, who died on July 21 at the age of 101, as an inspiring and popular leader who went beyond party politics to champion a wide range of public issues, including human rights and environmental protection. The Chief Minister also spoke of the contributions of P.P. Thankachan and Vazhoor Soman to the state's political landscape.
In the coming days, the 12-day session will take up several key bills, including the Kerala General Sales Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2024, the Kerala Societies Registration Bill, 2025, and the Kerala Guruvayur Devaswom (Amendment) Bill, 2025. The session is also expected to discuss the Supplementary Demands for Grants in the 2025-26 Budget. The legislature’s focus on law-making and its respectful tribute to its departed members underscore a commitment to both legislative progress and institutional decorum.
