Heavy Rain Expected in Kerala, IMD Issues Yellow Alert in Five Districts Thiruvananthapuram, October 12, 2025

YUGVARTA NEWS
Lucknow, 12 Oct, 2025 04:46 PMThe India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread rainfall across Kerala in the coming days, with a yellow alert issued in several districts. The heavy rain forecast is due to a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea, which is expected to strengthen and bring intense weather activity to the region. According to the IMD, Kerala and Mahe are likely to experience light to heavy rainfall, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph, between October 11 and 15. On Sunday, October 12, the districts of Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Wayanad have been placed under a yellow alert, with rainfall expected to range between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours. The IMD stated that heavy rain, measuring 7 to 11 cm in 24 hours, is very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala from October 12 to 17. Similar weather conditions are also expected in Lakshadweep on October 11 and 12, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. The northeast monsoon, which typically begins over Kerala by mid-October, is expected to arrive later this month. Once it begins, the intensity of rainfall across the state may increase further. The IMD has also advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough weather conditions. Fishing activities have been temporarily banned off the coasts of Kerala and Karnataka on Sunday, as well as in the Lakshadweep and adjoining Kanyakumari regions, where wind speeds could reach up to 55 kmph.
The IMD has issued yellow alerts for multiple districts on different days: Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Wayanad on October 12; Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Wayanad on October 13; Pathanamthitta and Kottayam on October 14; and Ernakulam and Idukki on October 15.
Authorities have warned residents, especially in hilly and low-lying areas, to remain cautious due to the risk of mudslides, landslides, and flash floods. Heavy rainfall could also cause traffic disruptions, waterlogging, and reduced visibility on roads. Temporary road blockages may occur due to fallen trees or debris, and power supply could be affected in certain regions.
The IMD has advised people to stay indoors during lightning and avoid open fields and exposed areas. Those living near rivers or in landslide-prone zones have been urged to stay alert and follow local safety instructions. Farmers have also been advised to take precautions, as the heavy rain may damage standing crops and vegetables nearing harvest.
With the weather expected to remain unstable for the next few days, Kerala’s disaster management teams are on alert, and district administrations have been instructed to take preventive measures. As the state prepares for another spell of intense monsoon activity, residents are urged to stay informed and prioritize safety while the heavy rains continue.
