Sissu, a popular winter destination in Lahaul-Spiti, will temporarily shut its doors to tourists for 40 days, from January 20 to February 28, as the local gram panchayat prioritizes spiritual observances over tourism. The closure aims to allow residents to celebrate sacred rituals, including Losar, the Tibetan New Year, and the Halda festival, without disruption.
Tourism-related activities in the village—including hotels, homestays, sightseeing, adventure sports, and recreational events—will be suspended during this period. Village elders and religious bodies emphasized that the temporary ban ensures the sanctity of traditional ceremonies and prevents the commercialisation of local culture.
The closure affects all major attractions within Sissu, including frozen waterfalls, snow trails, skiing zones, and adventure sports. While the Manali–Keylong route via the Atal Tunnel will remain operational depending on weather conditions, visitors are prohibited from entering the village for leisure purposes. Neighboring areas like Keylong, Koksar, and Yangla will remain open to tourists.
Local authorities, supported by women’s groups and youth volunteers, are enforcing the ban, with notices placed at all entry points. Community leaders have urged tourists to respect local sentiments and plan visits after February 28, when Sissu will reopen following the conclusion of the sacred winter rituals.
