Haryana IPS Officer Who Died by Suicide Accused Seniors of Harassment

Chandigarh, Oct 8, 2025: Senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who died by suicide at his Sector 11 residence in Chandigarh, had accused his senior officers of prolonged mental harassment in an eight-page note recovered by police. The officer allegedly shot himself with his service revolver, and his body was discovered by his daughter in the basement of their home. According to officials, Kumar had been distressed over the inclusion of his name in a bribery case based on a complaint from a liquor contractor. The complaint alleged that Kumar’s aide, Sushil Kumar, had demanded a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh in the officer’s name. While Sushil Kumar was arrested, Kumar’s name was also listed in the FIR, which has not yet been uploaded online. Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer and engineering graduate born on May 19, 1973, had been recently transferred to the Police Training College in Sunaria, Rohtak, on September 29. Previously, he served as Inspector General of the Rohtak Range and was scheduled to retire in May 2033. In his suicide note, Kumar accused ten senior officers, both serving and retired, of continuous psychological harassment. He alleged that they had conspired to ruin his professional career and subjected him to ongoing mental and emotional stress. Sources indicate that the case may be connected to a corruption investigation in Rohtak, which Kumar had initiated before his death. Earlier, Kumar had written to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, raising concerns over promotions granted to IPS officers. He claimed that the promotions had been conducted illegally, bypassing Union Home Ministry guidelines and relying solely on the approval of the Finance Department. The incident has shocked the police fraternity and the public. Chandigarh Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Kumar’s death, examining the contents of the suicide note, and assessing the claims of harassment made against the senior officers. Authorities are also reviewing the FIR and associated complaints to understand the background of the allegations. The case has sparked discussions on mental health and workplace pressure within law enforcement agencies. Police officers and legal experts have emphasized the need for timely intervention and support systems to address grievances among officers. Family members of the late officer have called for a fair investigation to uncover the truth behind the allegations of harassment and ensure justice. Y Puran Kumar’s death highlights the growing concerns about stress, accountability, and professional ethics in law enforcement. Authorities have assured that the investigation will be thorough, with attention given to both the personal and professional challenges faced by officers in the police force. This tragic incident has drawn attention to the need for reforms in administrative procedures and grievance redressal mechanisms within the police department to prevent similar cases in the future.
