PM Modi Backs Team India for Commonwealth Games 2026

New Delhi, July 24, 2026 India's campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 has begun with encouragement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who conveyed his best wishes to the Indian contingent ahead of the prestigious multi-sport event in Glasgow. His message highlights the nation's confidence in its athletes as they prepare to compete with commitment and determination on the international stage. In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “As the Commonwealth Glasgow 2026 Games begin, my best wishes to the Indian contingent. I am confident that our athletes will participate in the Games with passion, determination and a spirit of excellence. The skills and dedication of our athletes always inspire countless Indians.” The Games were officially declared open by King Charles III during a colourful ceremony at Glasgow's OVO Hydro, marking the event's return to the Scottish city after 2014. Olympic medallists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain led the Indian contingent during the Parade of Nations. Mirabai carried the Tricolour as India's flag-bearer, while Lovlina carried the ceremonial Commonwealth baton. India has fielded a 123-member contingent competing across eight able-bodied sports and five para sports. Running from July 23 to August 2, the Commonwealth Games 2026 will bring together athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories across 10 sports over 11 days. With a strong contingent and high expectations, India will aim to build on its successful Commonwealth Games legacy and deliver another memorable performance.
