India Beat Pakistan 5-3 to Qualify for Round 2 of FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026
Harmanpreet Singh and Abhishek scored twice each as India edged past Pakistan in a high-scoring clash; England topped the group after thrashing Wales 8-2

Lucknow, 19 Aug, 2026 11:11 PMIndia secured their place in the second round of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 with a thrilling 5-3 victory over Pakistan in a high-scoring contest. The result also ended Pakistan’s campaign, while England topped the group after an emphatic 8-2 win over Wales.
Harmanpreet Singh and Abhishek were the stars for India, scoring two goals apiece, while Hardik Singh converted a penalty stroke to complete India’s tally. Pakistan’s Hannan Shahid scored twice and Sufyan Khan added one, but their efforts were not enough to keep Pakistan alive in the tournament.
India made a blistering start, with Harmanpreet opening the scoring in the fifth minute. The Indian captain made no mistake with a powerful drag flick from the first penalty corner, sending the ball into the bottom-right corner.
Abhishek doubled India’s advantage six minutes later with a superb individual effort. Showing impressive skill and composure, he weaved his way through the Pakistan defence and finished from close range.
Harmanpreet struck again in the 21st minute. After initially attempting a clever variation from a penalty corner, the ball came back to him and he unleashed a powerful slap from close range to put India 3-0 ahead.
Pakistan responded almost immediately. A minute later, Hannan Shahid produced a brilliant individual run, using his pace and dribbling ability to score a field goal and reduce the deficit to 3-1.
The action continued at a frantic pace. Abhishek restored India’s three-goal cushion in the 24th minute with another superb piece of skill inside the goalmouth, completing his second goal of the match.
Pakistan answered once again moments later when Sufyan Khan converted their first penalty corner with a powerful drag flick, making it 4-2 at half-time.
India controlled much of the third quarter and extended their lead early in the second half. A dangerous tackle by Arshad Liaqat on Sukhjeet Singh resulted in a penalty stroke, with Hardik Singh stepping up and calmly converting to make it 5-2.
India continued to dominate possession through the third quarter, but Pakistan came out with greater intensity in the final period. Their high press eventually paid off when Hannan Shahid broke through one-on-one with Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera and calmly finished into the near-post bottom corner to make it 5-3.
The goal set up a tense finish, with Pakistan throwing everything forward in search of another breakthrough. India, however, held their defensive shape and saw out the closing stages to secure a crucial victory.
Earlier in the day, England strengthened their position at the top of the group with a comprehensive 8-2 victory over Wales. They will carry three points and a +2 goal difference into the second round.
India and England will be joined in the next stage by the Netherlands and one of Argentina or New Zealand, setting up another demanding phase of the tournament.
For Pakistan, however, the 5-3 defeat brought their World Cup campaign to an end.
