Lucknow, 12 Oct, 2026 08:29 PMNew Delhi, October 12 , 2026 Sending robots to Mars is significantly cheaper and simpler than sending astronauts. Robotic missions do not require life-support systems, food supplies or a return journey, while a human mission involves complex safety measures, heavy equipment and enormous fuel requirements. According to the provided estimates, a crewed mission to Mars could cost as much as $600 billion, whereas robotic missions such as NASA’s Perseverance rover cost less than $3 billion. The difference reflects the additional resources needed to transport and sustain humans in deep space. A crewed Mars mission could last up to three years, requiring continuous supplies of oxygen, water and food. Life-support equipment adds considerable weight to the spacecraft, increasing the fuel needed for launch and travel. Astronauts must also be protected from cosmic radiation and the health risks associated with prolonged exposure to microgravity. Robotic spacecraft can remain on Mars to conduct research until their power systems stop functioning. Human missions, however, require a reliable return vehicle, adding further engineering challenges, fuel requirements and costs. Despite their expense, astronauts offer adaptability that robots cannot fully replicate. While a rover moves slowly across the Martian surface, humans can make decisions quickly, respond to unexpected discoveries and perform a wider range of experiments. Although robotic missions are more economical, human exploration could offer scientific advantages that make the additional investment worthwhile.
