Centuries-Old ‘Raag-Viraag’ Fair Shifts from Manikarnika Ghat to Temple Premises Amid Construction Work

Varanasi | March 21, 2026 One of the most unique and spiritually symbolic traditions of Varanasi will see a significant change this year. The centuries-old ‘Raag-Viraag’ fair, usually held at the sacred Manikarnika Ghat, will not take place at its traditional location due to ongoing construction work. Instead, the programme will be shifted to the premises of the Masan Nath Temple. The annual event, dedicated to Baba Masan Nath, is traditionally celebrated from the fifth to the seventh day of the Chaitra Navratri. The festival begins with rituals, prayers, and offerings on the first day, followed by community feasts and devotional music on the second day. On the final day, the ‘Raag-Viraag’ fair is organised, symbolising the contrast between life and death, joy and sorrow. This unique tradition, believed to be around 400 years old, is known for its deeply symbolic cultural expression. In earlier years, performances would take place near funeral pyres at the ghat, reflecting the transient nature of life. The event also includes a night-long devotional performance, historically linked to a tradition where women performers offer prayers seeking spiritual liberation and a better future. Organisers stated that due to limited space and ongoing development work at the ghat, along with logistical challenges, the decision was made to shift the entire event to the temple premises this year. They have also requested devotees to follow safety guidelines and cooperate with the arrangements. Despite the change in venue, the essence of the tradition remains intact, continuing to reflect the spiritual depth and cultural heritage of Kashi, where faith, philosophy, and ritual come together in a unique way.
