UAE Freezes Iran Trade as Gulf Tensions Surge

New Delhi, August 19, 2026 The United Arab Emirates has suspended all trade, commercial exchanges and financial transactions with Iran, signalling a major escalation in already strained relations between the two countries. The move follows renewed missile concerns and growing threats to maritime security in the Gulf. "In light of regional escalations... all trade, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran have been halted until further notice," UAE foreign ministry communications director Afra Al Hameli said. The announcement came shortly after residents received a temporary phone alert warning of a "potential missile threat". "Due to the current situation, potential missile threats, immediately seek a safe place in the closest secure building," the interior ministry said in the phone alert, which was lifted shortly afterwards. It was the first such warning since a false alarm in June and another alert in July involving an attack that did not enter UAE territory. Tankers linked to state-owned oil company ADNOC have also faced repeated targeting in recent weeks, adding to security concerns across the region. Since the Middle East war began on February 28, the UAE has reportedly faced nearly 3,000 missile and drone attacks, more than any other country in the region. The UAE further accused Iran of launching two ballistic missiles towards maritime navigation in the Gulf, a claim Tehran strongly denied. "UAE air defenses detected two ballistic missiles launched from Iran toward the country, with the first falling outside the country's territorial waters, while the second fell within the territorial waters," the ministry said. A later statement added: "Assessments carried out showed that the two ballistic missiles detected coming from Iran were targeting maritime navigation and fell into the sea." Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei "categorically rejected the United Arab Emirates' claim that Iran had launched a missile toward that country", calling it harmful to regional trust and security efforts. The latest confrontation comes after a memorandum of understanding between the two sides, which had brought a temporary pause in attacks, later collapsed. Meanwhile, Iran has warned that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until it reaches a peace agreement with the United States, raising further concerns over shipping and trade in the region. With economic ties now frozen and maritime tensions continuing to rise, the UAE-Iran standoff has entered a new and more serious phase.
