Trump: ‘Iran Will Not Get a Nuclear Weapon, War Will End Soon’

US President Donald Trump, speaking from the Oval Office, linked the Iran conflict to energy prices and broader US political issues. He claimed that the US economy is seeing record levels of employment and income while stressing that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains a priority.
Trump said the US is bringing in more money than ever before and claimed that employment is at its highest level in history, while poverty is at its lowest. He also said people are earning more money than they ever have. Turning to Iran, Trump said, “Now for that people are going to have to pay some extra. If they had a vote on lower gas prices or letting Iran have a nuclear weapon, I think it would be a massive landslide - people don't want Iran to have a nuclear weapon.”
Trump further said, “And you know what, they won't. And the war's going to end soon and when it ends your gas prices are going to drop to a level that they were before, maybe even lower.” He recalled leaving Iowa and telling his team that the US would have to make an excursion to Iran, arguing that without strikes by B-2 bombers, Iran could have obtained a nuclear weapon.
Trump also compared the Iran issue with what he said could happen if Democrats returned to power. He said, “I equated somewhat to the Democrats. If they ever got into power, they will terminate the filibuster and they will immediately have DC as a state. They will immediately have Puerto Rico as a state. That gives them four more senators, that gives them lots of other things like 12 congressmen. They want to have ideally 21 Supreme Court Justices. They will have everything they ever dreamed of and frankly Republicans should terminate the filibuster because if you don't do it they're going to do it and you can't let that happen.”
Trump’s remarks therefore brought together three issues—US economic conditions, the Iran nuclear question and the future of American political institutions. His comments also tied the outcome of the Iran conflict to his expectation of lower gas prices once the war comes to an end.
