Imran Khan Back in Adiala Jail After Hospital Check-Up

New Delhi, August 21, 2026 Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sent back to Adiala Jail after undergoing a detailed medical examination at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad. The 73-year-old PTI founder was taken to the hospital following a Supreme Court order for specialised medical care, placing renewed focus on his health and the ongoing dispute between his party and the government over his treatment. "A team of qualified doctors, including an ophthalmologist, a cardiologist, and a physician, conducted a detailed examination of him and declared him medically fit," Information Minister Attaullah Tarar wrote on X about Khan's health checks. "After the completion of this entire process, he was transferred back to Adiala Jail," he added. According to Geo News, citing sources, Khan was transported under extremely tight security and later shifted back to his prison cell. Dozens of PTI supporters also gathered near the hospital during his brief stay, AFP reported. Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 and maintains that the cases against him are politically motivated, an allegation rejected by the government. His lawyers have claimed that his health has deteriorated in prison and that he has suffered significant vision loss in his right eye. The Supreme Court had directed authorities to move him to Shifa International Hospital within 48 hours and allow him access to a medical panel that included his personal physician. The Shehbaz Sharif government initially agreed to implement the order but later sought a review, arguing that medical reports showed no condition requiring immediate treatment. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar had opposed treatment at a private hospital, arguing that a convicted prisoner should be treated in jail or at a public hospital under the law. Khan was eventually taken to Shifa International Hospital after PTI threatened contempt proceedings if the court’s order was not implemented. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry later said the government would fully comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling, maintaining that there had been no intention to defy or delay it. With the medical examination completed, Khan has now returned to Adiala Jail, marking another key development in the continuing legal and political battle surrounding the former Pakistani leader.
