Lucknow, 23 Aug, 2026 11:23 PMNew Delhi, August 23, 2026 A shocking incident in Bangladesh’s Rangpur has triggered a major police investigation after the decomposed bodies of four members of a Hindu family were recovered from their two-storey house, which was locked from the outside. The bodies were found on Saturday night, August 22, after residents and relatives became concerned over a strong foul smell coming from inside the house in the Kamalkashana Machuapara area. The deceased were identified as retired school teacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65; his wife, Pritilata Chakraborty Bala, 50; their 25-year-old daughter, Kandi Chakraborty; and 12-year-old son, Priyam Chakraborty. According to Rangpur Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazmul Quader, the bodies were found at different locations. Ganapati’s body was on the roof, while Pritilata and Kandi were found on the staircase leading towards the third floor. Priyam was found lying under a bed. The family’s relative, Pooja Chakraborty, said she last spoke to them on Thursday night, August 20. She said that when she could not contact anyone on Saturday, she went to Ganapati Chakraborty’s house with her husband at around 9 pm. When they reached the house, they found the main gate locked from the outside. Pooja then contacted Bangladesh’s emergency number 999 and was asked to inform the Kotwali police station. Police later arrived and broke open the main gate, recovering all four bodies. Ganapati Chakraborty had retired from Rangpur District School in December last year and later provided medical services from a homoeopathy chamber at Rangpur Cooperative Market. His daughter had completed her Master’s degree in English from Carmichael College, while Priyam was a fifth-grade student at Rangpur Zilla School. Police and CID teams are now collecting evidence from the house. OC Nazmul Quader said the main gate was locked from the outside when police arrived. He said CID investigators are gathering evidence from the scene and an investigation has already begun. Investigators are examining several possibilities, including planned murder, robbery or a family tragedy. Rangpur CID in-charge Sumit Chowdhury said robbery was being considered in the initial stage of the investigation, but the real reason would only become clear after a detailed probe. The bodies have been sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations, which are expected to help establish the exact cause and time of death. While the incident comes amid wider concerns over violence involving members of the Hindu community in Bangladesh since the political unrest and change of government in August 2024, investigators have not yet determined the motive behind the deaths or established whether the family’s Hindu identity was connected to the case.
